Next one is “And you know when the truth is told.” This line introduces choruses, and the fact that Joel highlights honesty says a lot about the meaning behind the song. The first one is obvious (because it includes the title!): “When will you realize, Vienna waits for you.” So we hear about Joel’s connection to the city, and that it’s a metaphor for all the places that await us. There are three, and yes, one does include the title, but the most important one (again in my opinion) does not. The crucial lyric of “Vienna,” in my opinion, is not the lyric that includes the title. While words used like “about” and “out” rhyme perfectly, words like “fine” and “time” almost rhyme. But when rhyme is said, “near rhyme” is what is meant. The next stanza consists of the first two lines rhyming again, however the last two lines end on a word that rhymes with the last word of the previous stanza (confusing, I know). In each verse, the first two lines of each individual stanza rhyme, and the last two end on a word, that rhymes with nothing (yet). And “Vienna” is no exception to this, in fact, it may be the song behind Joel’s title. The most interesting part of the musicality of “Vienna” is the instrumental part of the song write before the chorus towards the end the only instruments used are an accordion, and a light beat.īilly Joel is a song-writing genius. Then, Joel multiplies the amount of instruments on the track by adding in accordions, strings, and more. The chorus then ends on a mini-outro on the piano.

The drum beat picks up during the chorus, using the cymbals more.

Once Joel begins singing, a light drum beat is added to the background, and the piano continues on.

#Vienna song full#
After the intro, the piano begins playing full chords, as the primary instrument of the song. “Vienna” (in Bb major) begins with a piano intro, starting with the note of G flat. “Vienna” was released in 1977 on the album, The Stranger, but it is also featured on many of his other albums, usually comprised of live performances, or hits such as: The Complete Hits Collection 1973-1997, 12 Gardens Live, The Complete Album Collection, and the Opus Collection. Billy Joel has performed “Vienna” multiple times, however, it was also covered by popular artist Ariana Grande in 2011. “Vienna” was written by Billy Joel, and produced by Phil Ramone. “Vienna,” musically goes in the order of verse, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, verse, verse, chorus, however, the song’s lyrics are unique to each individual verse and chorus.
